Many important freeways meet and pass through Panvel city and makes it a significant juncture from the economic point of view. Transport in Panvel

The major freeways crossing the city are Sion-Panvel Expressway—the busiest and connects the city to NH4, Mumbai-Pune Expressway—also known as Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway, NH 4B, and NH 17. The responsibility to maintain these expressways is of CIDCO.
Old Panvel has less maintained and congested roads due to the inapt planning, whereas the roads of New Panvel are carefully planned and have wide traffic lanes for core roads. The development and maintenance responsibility for the roads of Old Panvel is of PMC and for the roads of New Panvel is of CIDCO.

Due to the good connectivity through the developed expressways, the city is a great trade and industry junction. The gateway of Konkan region, Panvel, provides the best transport services for the commercial and travelling needs of the natives.

Railway in Panvel

The railway station of Panvel comes under Mumbai Division and is one of the most important railway junction in the Central Railway. It connects different train routes, such as Harbour Line, Central Line, Konkan Line and Western Freight Corridor. Structurally, the Panvel railway station is divided into two sections—Suburban Line, which includes four platforms and Main Line, which includes three platforms. Two more platforms are under construction yet.

Panvel railway station is considered equivalent to the Mumbai railway station for those trains which does not cross Mumbai. It is the stoppage for 12 daily passenger trains, 13 pairs of non-daily express trains and 9 pairs of daily express trains. Apart from these trains, the Panvel railway station handles 116 suburban trains and an ample number of freight trains. The stoppage period differs from 5 to 20 minutes based on the halting purpose, as Panvel serves a crew change and locomotive restocking point as well for the trains running on Diesel and electricity. The local trains include slow and fast train services, which start running from early in the morning till late night making the life of busy timelines of the natives easier.

Buses in Panvel

Buses are the most convenient primary mode of public transport. There are two bus terminals in the city—a State Transport stand nearby national highway running predominated ST bus services, which comes under MSRTC and NMMT stand nearby railway station, which is comes under Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport.
  • State transport does not only serves the commuting purpose of the natives and tourists, but also takes care of the postal mails, newspapers, distribution of medicines and goods transport. Besides all the hazards comprising hiked taxes, recurring losses and bad roads, it still retains its identity as the major transport service in the city.
  • Above and beyond ST buses, NMMT serves an additional option to the commuters travelling towards Navi Mumbai. NMTC offers the various modes of payment, such as paper tickets valid for single journey, weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly passes for daily travellers. It provides 50% discount for students and 75% discount for senior citizens. All fare needs to be paid in cash. Single journey fare depends on the distance of destination from the starting point.

You can get buses for Badalpur, Dombivli, Dadar, Kalyan and Thane from ST bus terminal and for Vashi and Thane from NMMT bus terminal. There are AC Volvo buses for Dadar from Panvel.

Sea Ports Near Panvel

Panvel is close by Western Coast and therefore are many sea ports nearby the city.  Few of the ports are Panvel Port, Nhava Sheva Port and Dharamtar Port.

Panvel Port: It is at 4 Kms driving distance from New Panvel. The total driving time is about 10 minutes.

Nhava Sheva Port: This port is also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port and is at about 373 Kms distance from Panvel. Road drive takes approx. 6 hours to travel till this port. The commonly known name of this port is derived from the names of villages Nhava and Sheva situated near the port. The major exports from this port are textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and sport goods and imports are vegetable oil, few metals, machinery, chemicals and plastics.

Dharamtar Port: This port is about 39 Kms from Panvel and it is about 1 hour road traveling distance. The port is used for warehousing and supply of merchandises and is well equipped and cost effective.

International Airport in Panvel

Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Maharashtra government through CIDCO are building Navi Mumbai International Airport through the Public Private Partnership in which AAI and CIDCO holds 13% of share each and the private sector partner holds the 74% share. This plan has already got the techno-feasibility clearance from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and central cabinet and is at the global tendering stage.
